PENTIDDY

It's the first week of the Easter holiday so traffic is much heavier than usual and Cornwall's beaches and beauty spots can be very busy.
I craved somewhere quiet and peaceful where I could wander, quieten my mind and hopefully calm my thoughts.  This pretty lane, very close to home, felt like it would lead to just the right place.

And sure enough . . . .

Pentiddy is privately owned, but the woodland is open to the public. It has an air of calm, enhanced by the birdsong, trees and wildflowers.

I love this gateway to the burial ground.

I didn't go in there today, though of course it is also open to the public; a grave was being quietly prepared and I felt it more respectful to walk through the woodland.
It's a 'natural' burial ground, so coffins are made of biodegradable material, bodies are not embalmed or cremated so that everything is returned to the earth in as natural a way as possible. There are no memorials or markers of any kind so that the whole site becomes a memorial.

Halfway round, a handy place to rest awhile and enjoy the sunshine.

or to go exploring, with one eye on me!

Lovely blossoms - I think maybe this is a cherry tree?

Apart from one man and his dog who were just leaving as I arrived, I saw no-one else in the hour or so that I spent in these lovely surroundings.
Mission accomplished!
Let's go home, Benji.

    1. The whole woodland is peaceful and quiet - I didn't need to enter the burial ground at all.

  3. Hope your injuries are getting better - a long walk would suggest that they are.

    1. Mary, I have replied twice to your comment and both posts have disappeared! No idea what's going on. Aaaarrrggghhh!!!! Trying again to say that it wasn't a very long walk but plenty of standing still, watching and listening to the various birds, basking in the sunshine while perched on a handy rock and a slow amble along the grassy path while Benji explored amongst the trees. Feeling a lot better now, thank you and just waiting for the area around my big toe to heal fully. xx

    1. Yes, thank you. Not quite as sore now, just waiting for the cut under my toe to heal (it's in THE most awkward place to cover with a dressing!) It will be good to walk in comfort again.

  6. What a lovely peaceful place, just my kind of walk. I like the idea of the burial ground and the rustic gate is lovely :)

    2. I felt prompted to read about natural burials when I reached home - and I'm very interested in the ethics of not contaminating the earth with chemicals (embalming fluids) or non-degradable materials (coffins that don't rot down but remain in the soil). It fits in with my thoughts on preserving and caring for the environment. I shall be investigating further! And if you need any more reason to 'go natuarally' - it's very much cheaper than the standard funeral!

  7. What a delightful place, to take a ramble....

How lovely that it is maintained and available, for public use.

  8. It's owned and maintained by a couple who live on site, in their eco house and who live completely 'off grid'. I do admire their ethics and way of life.

  11. What a pretty and rejuvenating place to walk. I had not heard of a natural burial place before, it is a lovely idea.

  12. Just found your blog by way of Frugally Challenged. I read so many books that take place in Cornwall that it will be nice to actually see the countryside that is being described. The last book I read that took place there was the mystery No Shred of Evidence by Charles Todd. Another that was good was The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruthl Ware. I'll book mark your blog.

    1. Thank you, Marcia and welcome to my blog. I hope you enjoy reading through my previous posts and enjoying the many photos. Even though I live here, I also read many books set in Cornwall and enjoy it when I recognise the places being mentioned.
I met Mary, of 'Frugally Challenged' when she came to Cornwall for a few days holiday and blogged about us being at Lanhydrock together.

  14. I've just found your blog again and I'm so happy to be back. I retired at Christmas and bought myself a new computer set up so lost all my favourites yet again. I've been going back a bit through your old posts (loved the one by your son from Syria!). And I did not know you could have natural burial sites in the UK!! You live and learn I guess.

  15. HELLOOOOO! Good to see you back - and to know you've now retired. So what plans do you have for your retirement? I've just been catching up on your recent trip - what a narrow escape you had in your choice of 'safe' hotel. My travels have mostly been in my home county of Cornwall with my tent and dog, but in the near future, I may just have the opportunity to spread my wings a little further afield. I'll just leave you with that thought, but all will be revealed sooner or later ;)

  17. Greetings from the running wave! I see you have a new furry friend! Probably not so new for you now, but we haven't been in touch for a while so I am not sure when Benji came to live with you! He looks adorable, and definitely a character! He and our young boy Ted would get on well! I hope you are well and haven't melted too much over the past few days! Best wishes Amanda 26.07.19

  19. How DARE these hackers use my blog to advertise their shady and illegal businesses? I have just spent ages deleting their stupid comments, but they are like persistent weeds, springing up all over the place. I hope no-one is taken in by their offers of get-rich-quick dealings.
